First Trans Pride Picnic

First Trans Pride Picnic

Hi everyone! I’m Matti Colley and I’m part of LocalMotion Lincoln, helping to spread the word about our amazing movement.

LocalMotion Lincoln is all about empowerment, community and challenging social, economic and environmental injustices. We believe everyone should have an opportunity to have their say about life in Lincoln and be a changemaker.

We live our values of inclusion and fairness and believe in the power of conversation to help bring communities together. We’re not afraid of being in chats which are frank and upfront.

As a proud transgender woman, I attended the first ever picnic organised by Lincs Trans Pride on sunny Saturday, August 30 at the Lincoln Arboretum.

More than 80 Trans and non-binary people and friends and family from across the county came together to chat and relax for 2 hours in a spirit of solidarity and hope.

I know from personal experience that the power of having a safe space to “just be” cannot be underestimated, especially given the unfortunate, continuing prevalence of transphobic verbal abuse and behaviours in Lincs and the UK as a whole.

Recently released Home Office statistics for the year April 2023-March 2024 found that Lincs Police recorded 68 transphobic hate crimes, an increase from 41 recorded in 2022-23.

Liv Hennessy, an experienced third sector creative professional who is non-binary and who helped to co-found Lincs Trans Pride in June 2023, told me that: “The committee is really pleased with the turnout. We’re hoping to host more events across Lincolnshire to help build visibility and ensure that all trans and non-binary people in the county feel supported”.

Lincs Trans Pride is currently looking for more trans and non-binary people to join its committee, especially trans feminine people.
