Make your nomination for city’s unsung heroes
Do you know someone who literally deserves a medal?
City of Lincoln Council is calling on residents to help recognise the city’s unsung heroes by submitting nominations for the 2026 Mayoral Medals by Friday, March 27.
The medals are awarded to people who have worked tirelessly for others without recognition or reward, or who have gone above and beyond to improve the lives of people within the city.
From voluntary workers and charity fundraisers to organisers of community events and clubs, these awards celebrate those who give their time to make Lincoln a better place.
The tradition of the medals dates back to the First World War, when they were presented by the Mayor in recognition of returning soldiers’ service to their country and city. In 1995, the Council agreed to restore this historic tradition, with up to six Mayoral Medals now presented each year.
All nominations will be considered by the Right Worshipful the Mayor of Lincoln, Councillor Bill Mara, alongside Kate Fenn, the Civic & International Partnerships Manager.
When making a nomination, residents need to clearly explain the nominee’s contribution and how it reflects the purpose of the Mayoral Medals.
Kate Fenn said: “Mayoral Medals are a way for the city to say thank you to those who quietly dedicate themselves to helping others.
“Lincoln is full of people who make a real difference every day, often without expecting anything in return, and these medals allow us to recognise their incredible contribution.”
Successful nominees, along with those who nominated them, will be invited to attend a special ceremony at the historic Guildhall in April 2026, when the Mayor will formally present the accolades

The council discourages people from submitting multiple nominations for the same individual – it will not strengthen their application - and from putting forward close relatives.
