Residents tackle dangerous road crossing

Residents tackle dangerous road crossing

By Alan Walker

Chair, Burton Road and District Residents’ Association (BRADRA)

Having experienced a personal near miss on the Burton Road zebra crossing I made the public aware of the dangers.

The response was an overwhelming catalogue of similar close shaves, some involving young children. It was clear something had to be done, and the formation of a residents’ association was the best possible answer,

Change is coming to Burton Road through the association. It is early days, but the Burton Road and District Residents’ Association (BRADRA) already has a constitution, a committee, and three elected officials. Its first AGM will be held on Friday, June 5 at 6.30pm at the Methodist Hall on Burton Road. Anyone with a connection to Burton Road is welcome to attend, contribute to the discussion, and help us build a better Burton Road for all.

We have also developed a clear set of goals. Any issues that fall into these categories will be tackled as mini projects over time. See infographic (below)

BRADRA’s first project is tackling the dangerous traffic situation on Burton Road. With support from Cllr Neil Murray and the Highways team, BRADRA is now monitoring the zebra crossing, counting the traffic and monitoring pedestrian use. Data and evidence collected over the next few weeks will be compiled into a report for the Highways team.

The data collected so far is damning. Near misses on the zebra crossing are regular. Some periods of the day are extremely busy, and many cars speed down Burton Road.

Look out for our posts on our Facebook page (see: https://www.facebook.com/BRADRALincoln/) and our posters in shop windows. And give us a wave if you see us outside the post office.
