Discover Lincoln’s hidden art gems at WonderGround festival

Lincoln will be shining a light on its underground arts scene at the aptly named WonderGround festival, as GEORGIA PREECE explains below.

Over the last few months, I've been chatting with people across Lincoln about the creative and cultural scenes in the city.

I’ve been an active part of the poetry and visual art scene since moving to Lincoln in 2014, but I'm very aware there are big pockets of creativity that I’ve never encountered here. Lincoln is home to a creative ecosystem that, if you have the patience and the time to do a little digging, you will uncover some gems.

Lincoln has a rich underground arts scene built up of people with day jobs, who attend open mics and make artwork in community groups once they have clocked out of work.

I think it's about time we celebrate those people and indulge in the art that's made by those who might not even call themselves artists because the majority of their time is spent in other professions.

From May 21-27 we’re going to be celebrating culture and creativity in the city with a week of performances, craft markets, workshops and participatory activities. We are aiming to showcase existing creativity from across the city.

  • City square will host some of Lincoln's music scene from a range of different genres
  • Central market, the festival hub, will be home to a makers’ market of emerging creatives
  • Cornhill will host a range of pop ups: from parkour demos and workshops to dance performances and sing-a-longs
  • Liquorice Park will be home to a day of creative wellbeing, so you can pause and use the arts to unwind
  • There will be workshops in Ermine, Moorland and the City Centre, so you can try out zine making, creative writing and crafts!
