Could you help a teenager leaving care?

The Supported Lodgings scheme gives young people leaving the care system they help and guidance they need as they move towards independence.

Lincolnshire County Council has backed the first-ever National Supported Lodgings Week running to November 16 and is looking for hosts for the county scheme.

Supported Lodgings play a vital role in offering stability to young people leaving care as teenagers aged 16+ live with a host who provides a safe home, everyday guidance and the support of a trusted adult.

Cllr Natalie Oliver, Executive Member for Children’s Services explained: “While most people are familiar with fostering and adoption, supported lodgings is an equally important but less well-known element of the support we provide to young people in care.

“We consider applications from people in a variety of circumstances and household set-ups, and we offer ongoing training, advice and financial support. So, if you could help a young person find their feet in the adult world, don't miss out on this incredible opportunity to make a real difference.”

Kate has been a supported lodgings provider for nearly four years. She said: “My parents used to be foster carers, and I was brought up sharing my room with some of the children they fostered.  This, and having two children of my own, has helped me to have an understanding of some of the issues facing young people today and is one of the reasons I wanted to support a young person.

“I am passionate about my role supporting young people and want the young people who live with me to feel valued and listened too, and I hope that I can make a small difference to their lives.

“The things I’ve enjoyed doing as a supported lodgings provider with the young people who have lived with me range from helping with cooking, budgeting, career advice and teaching them how to drive to watching Love Island, eating chocolate and sailing boat in Greece!

“There is nothing that gives me greater pleasure than seeing the change between the young person who moves in and the confident young person who moves out.  It’s a real privilege to be part of this journey.”
