Electric bike rider tried to escape police
The rider of an electric motorcycle fell off the machine as he tried to escape police, a court has been told.
During routine patrols on his BMW police motorcycle, PC Dan Thomas spotted an unregistered and uninsured SurRon Light Bee electric motorcycle on Bunkers Hill, Lincoln on February 2 this year.
The driver of the electric motorcycle failed to stop and rode off at speeds estimated to be between 50 and 70 miles per hour.
At the junction of Wolsey Way, the rider went off-road and onto grass, trying to evade an armed response vehicle, but fell off the bike.
The rider, Jonathon Brinkley, 40, of Outer Circle Drive, Lincoln tried to pick the motorcycle up but instead caused it to spin out of control and it hit him in the face causing lacerations and a suspected broken nose.
The suspect was detained and reported for numerous offences including failing to stop, no license, no insurance, and riding without due care and attention.
At a hearing at Lincoln Magistrates Court on Friday September 26 Brinkley pleaded guilty to all offences; he received nine points on his license and was ordered to pay £390.00 in fines.
PC Thomas of the Roads Policing Unit said: “Lincolnshire Police are taking decisive action on the use of these electric bikes around the county. Offenders are being detained, vehicles are being seized and destroyed, and those enabling illegal use – whether knowingly or not – are being reported to court.”
“We are not only resolute about traffic enforcement; we are determined to protect public safety, to ensure our streets are a safe and welcoming place to be.”
