£2.1 billion opportunity at RAF Scampton
A once-in-a-generation, £2.1 billion opportunity – this is how the redevelopment of the former RAF Scampton base has been described after updated plans were released this week.
Scampton Holdings Ltd (SHL) presented updated proposals, artist impressions and phased delivery plans to members of West Lindsey District Council as the Home Office’s disposal of the site becomes imminent.
Councillors praised the ambition of the vision and the work to ensure the project delivers economic, social and strategic benefits for West Lindsey, Lincolnshire and nationally.
Although the site remains in the ownership of the Home Office, a decision on the disposal is expected in the coming weeks. The council continues to work proactively to secure a positive long-term future for the site, which will deliver significant beneficial outcomes for generations to come.
As part of this work, SHL, the Councils development partner, continues to actively develop its proposals, engaging with high-profile investors who recognise the national significance of the opportunity.
Councillors at the briefing remained committed to support the future of the site and were encouraged by the continued level of confidence shown by investors and partners.
Cllr Moira Westley, Deputy Leader of the Council said: “RAF Scampton is an incredibly important site for West Lindsey, and we are absolutely committed to doing what we can in securing the very best outcome for our district and our communities.
“It’s been inspiring to see the vision taking shape particularly the care shown for our heritage and the significant investments already made. This is a once in a generation opportunity, and the potential here is truly exciting.”
Peter Hewitt, Chairman, Scampton Holdings Ltd; said: “What is clear is that our proposed redevelopment represents an extraordinary and likely unique opportunity for both West Lindsey and Lincolnshire. It offers the potential to regenerate, reinvigorate and reposition the region as a leader in advanced defence, aerospace and innovation. The vision for Scampton to become part of the UK’s Critical National Infrastructure is remarkable in its scale and ambition.”
The team showed the masterplan which would deliver a transformational, future-facing redevelopment that stands to become part of the UK’s critical national infrastructure.
Key strengths of the proposal include:
· Alignment with the UK’s Strategic Defence Review, with private sector investment supporting national defence infrastructure and capability
· A unique community rooted in aviation heritage, actively celebrating and promoting aviation activities
· A skilled local workforce, shaped by Lincolnshire’s long association with RAF operations
· A significant opportunity to build sovereign capability for UK defence and space sectors
· A dedicated and experienced delivery team, supported by established local construction partners
· Independent assessment confirming an overall economic benefit of £2.1bn
Cllr Roger Patterson, ward member for Scampton said the opportunities for West Lindsey, the wider county and even beyond our boundaries are immense.
He added: “This is a £2.1 billion opportunity and potentially much more as the full vision unfolds. What’s being proposed at Scampton has the power to transform our local economy, create skilled jobs, and position Lincolnshire at the forefront of innovation. It’s an incredibly exciting prospect for our communities and for future generations.”
Cllr Di Rodgers who represents the nearby Welton ward said:
“As someone who once lived on the site, this project means a great deal to me. What the team is hoping to achieve with the heritage zone is truly wonderful. What we have seen so far is incredibly impressive. It reflects real care, real ambition and a genuine respect for Scampton’s story.”
