March to Reclaim the Night
Lincoln Students’ Union is inviting people to join its members marching through the city tonight to support people’s right to feel safe on the streets, day or night.
Students and staff hope the wider Lincoln community will unite with them to inspire positive change.
Reclaim the Night dates back to the 1970s, born as a global response to the urgent issues of sexual harassment and violence against women. The movement organises marches and rallies worldwide, raising awareness about sexual assault and advocating for the safety of women and marginalized communities in public spaces, especially after dark.
Ahead of the march, Thomas Woodcock, Student Support and Development Officer, shared this message: “The reclaim the Night march matters to me because I believe everyone deserves to feel safe, day or night, and I’m here to stand alongside others who share that vision for a better future.
“I believe it is everyone’s right to feel safe, and that right must be protected with unwavering commitment. Change doesn’t happen overnight, but together, through our collective voices and actions, we can build a community where safety is not a privilege, but a reality for all. I’ve attended Reclaim the Night throughout my time at university, and now I am honoured to lead this year’s march.
“Over the years, I’ve watched the crowd grow, reflecting our community’s powerful and persistent call for safety at night, and I’m excited to see how many will join the march with me on the November 20 to Reclaim the Night."
This march is also part of the broader White Ribbon Campaign, encouraging individuals to wear white ribbons as a pledge to never commit, condone, or remain silent about violence against women. White ribbons will be available on the night for those who wish to show their support.
Meet at 5 pm outside the Students' Union.
