Motorists get first sight of Lancaster Bomber sculpture
A full-size replica of an Avro Lancaster Bomber Mark 1 has been erected at the side of the A46 between Lincoln and Newark.
The sculpture titled On Freedom’s Wings was installed near Norton Disney yesterday after years of fundraising by the Bomber County Trust, which expects around 35,000 motorists a day to see the landmark and described it Lincolnshire’s answer to The Angel of the North.
The Lancaster is 26m long and with a 31m wingspan and was built by Timmins Engineering and Construction Ltd of Caenby Corner – workers are pictured below on the sculpture to mark Armed Forces Day earlier this year.
Lincolnshire is known as Bomber County due to the number of airfields located here during the Second World War serving Bomber Command and the sculpture is erected on titled wings as if it is flying home after a long mission to the former RAF Swinderby.
