Raising awareness of stalking
What is stalking?
The Lincolnshire Police Force has released a video highlighting the crime and the impact it can have on victims.
The Office for National Statistics reports that around 1.5 million people (aged 16+) in England and Wales experience stalking annually, meaning roughly one in seven adults are victims, with women, young people (especially 16-24), and LGBTQ+ individuals disproportionately affected, though many cases go unreported due to fear, shame, or distrust in the justice system.
The police outline that:
- A stalker repeatedly interferes in someone’s life where they are not wanted and have no right to be.
- They are fixated and persistent. Stalking may not involve physical abuse, but it can escalate or continue for months or years, causing severe distress.
- It can be life changing.
- Anyone can be a stalker. Anyone can be stalked.
- Stalking is shockingly common.
- It’s never too early to seek help — or to help someone being stalked.
