Roxy left to suffer by owner, court told.
Last summer Roxy, a German Shepherd, was found in Lincoln in an emaciated state and suffering from multiple, untreated health problems.
Despite finally getting treated by a vet Roxy continued to suffer and be in pain, so several days later she was put to sleep on humane grounds.
The dog’s owner, 48-year-old Steven Broughton, pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering when he appeared at Lincoln Magistrates’ Court and was banned from owning any animal for five years.
A member of the public found Roxy on June 7 on Laughton Way and, seeing her state, took the dog to a vet who called the police.
After treatment Roxy was taken to police kennels, where due to severe ongoing health problems she was seen by a vet on several more occasions.
Broughton, had earlier flagged officers down reporting he couldn’t find his dog. In interview he said he could not afford to pay to get her treated and was trying to help her by applying some topical cream.
DC Gemma Oxby, the Lincolnshire Police’s Dog Legislation Officer, said: “I would like to pass my sincere thanks to the person who took Roxy to the vet and to those who treated and cared for her.
“We shouldn’t have to remind people to get prompt treatment for any animals who have health issues.
“When we do see animal cruelty we will act swiftly and robustly to put owners who have failed their animals before the courts
“The penalty for causing unnecessary suffering is up to five years in prison and a ban from keeping animals.”
Brougton, of St Hughs Street, Lincoln was also given a Community Order to participate in rehabilitation activity for 30 days. He must pay fines and costs of £299.
