Lincoln Against Poverty
Is poverty just about money?
That’s the question the people of Lincoln are going to be able to ask on Thursday, January 16 at an event designed to give them a voice in the fight against poverty.
“We need to start to tackle the causes of poverty, not only the symptoms that are visible to us,” said Charlotte Brooks of event organisers LocalMotion Lincoln
“We need to stop looking at poverty as an economic measurement but begin to explore the people, stories and experiences of those that find themselves victims of the systems that are meant to help them.”
The Lincoln Against Poverty Assembly will bring together various community listening programmes from the last two years. The first part of the event will a celebration and reflection of this work with the afternoon being used to hear diverse voices to redesign anti-poverty strategy in Lincoln.
Charlotte added that people with real experiences would be especially welcome at the event:
- Do you have an experience of the welfare system? Specifically, the Personal Independence Payment (PIP) process?
- Do you feel excluded or discriminated against because of a physical or mental health condition?
- Do you have a past experience of addiction?
- Are you worried about the housing situation in Lincoln?
- Are you fed up with everything being done online?
- Do you value your communities third spaces and the positive impact they are making?
The Lincoln Against Poverty Assembly will be held at the Engine Shed on the University of Lincoln Campus on Thursday, January 16 from 10am to 3.45pm
If you are on a low income, would normally work on a Thursday and would need to take time off to attend, or would like to represent an organisation with a turnover of less than £50,000 per year, you can make a request for financial support upon sign up.
