Mal’s blooming success
Lincoln’s chrysanthemum king Mal Reynolds has successfully defended his title at the national championships.
He also picked up a second trophy at the National Chrysanthemum Society’s championships in Stafford earlier this month.
Mal defended the George Munro Challenge Cup for which the winner is acknowledged to be the National Champion for late large single chrysanthemums. The class requires five vases of five blooms in each vase with four distinct cultivars five blooms of one cultivar in each vase.
He was also awarded the Robertson Challenge Trophy, which requires three vases of large singles, three distinct cultivars, five blooms of one cultivar in each vase.
“In general, and speaking with other exhibitors, it has been a difficult year and many single growers have not managed to reach the required number of either vases or cultivars to exhibit as flowers are running late in development,” explained Mal.
“Timing is crucial in order to get the right number of blooms on the show bench at the right time and the vagaries in the weather has been problematic.
“For various reason this growing year has been a struggle and retaining my title makes it all worthwhile.”
