Look up for advent art

Don’t forget to look up at the advent calendar adorning the windows of Lincoln’s Guildhall if you are in the city centre.

Original artwork created by University of Lincoln students is being displayed each day at the Guildhall and Stonebow in the lead up to Christmas Day and it is hoped the calendar will become a new Christmas tradition for the city.

Inspiration has become from the annual advent calendar celebration in Lincoln's twin city, Neustadt an der Weinstrasse.

Associate Professor and Creative Engagement Producer at the University, Rachel Baynton explained: “We've had lots of fun working on this project that celebrates our city's history, it's future, and the festive season. The students have had just a short week to contribute to this project and have responded to themes of togetherness, hope and joy, as well as the idea of building local and global relationships - inspired by our twin city of Neudstadt.”

One such work is My Sister and I by Lily-Maw Taylor, a third-year student at University of Lincoln School of Creative Arts, who enjoys making art that ranges from paintings to sculpture.

Lily Mae loves experimenting with colour and mixed media within their paintings, to emphasise and memorialise relationships so was inspired by looking at old family photographs and Juliette Belmonte’s portraits and mixed media techniques.

To create this work, Lily-Mae used documents and objects from hobbies within the art, layering and collaging documents and paints.

“This work tells a lot of stories about the relationship that Lily-Mae and their sister share - shared interests, favourite colours, flowers and lots more can be found intertwined within the painting,” added Rachel.

The images can be seen on the south-facing side of the Guildhall until Christmas Eve and will also be unveiled on Instagram: Lincoln Arts Centre: @lincsartscentre, Lincoln School of Creative Arts: @uolcreativearts and Lincoln Guildhall: @lincolnguildhall.
