Students tackle political populism in show

Sparky Sparky BOOM Theatre will debut their political exploration ‘Wasted Breath?’ at Lincoln Arts Centre tonight.

“Through the performance the company try to understand the concept of ‘populism’ in politics and contemporary culture. The show follows the six performers on a journey of honest discussion, choreographed movement, and attempt to fight the exhaustion of understanding complex political systems and movements,” explained member Katie Seller.

“Sparky Sparky Boom Theatre formed to create work that is provocative and thought-provoking but also works as an introduction to contemporary theatre for audiences who want to see new work that asks big questions.

“For our debut show, the company has looked at the timely subject of voter apathy, and young peoples’ voice in decision making – and we have been inspired by the work of acclaimed playwright and performer Chris Thorpe who we met as part of our studies at University of Lincoln School of Creative Arts.”

Sparky’s Director James Baker added: “This is a show for anyone on the political spectrum, it's about exposing populism and the people who abuse its power”

Wasted Breath? Can be seen at 7pm tonight at the BLOOM Festival of New Theatre at the arts centre and as part of LSCA LaunchFest 2025 - a celebration of new art, dance, music, theatre, writing, film, media and performance from the current and graduating students of University of Lincoln’s Creative Arts courses.
