Annabelle’s outstanding contribution to local eye care

Optician Annabelle Magee’s dedication to eye care in the local community has been recognised at the NHS Lincolnshire Primary Care Staff Awards for 2025.

The owner of Clear View Opticians on Burton Road received the Optometry Outstanding Individual Contribution Award at a Valuing and Recognition Event held in March at the Lincolnshire Showground.

It was attended by more than 200 people and hosted by the Lincolnshire Integrated Care Board and the Primary Care People Group to celebrate the hard work of staff across the four pillars of NHS Primary Care: General Practice, Community Pharmacy, Dentistry, and Optometry.

Leaders from each pillar gave service updates, sharing success stories while acknowledging ongoing issues. A clear theme emerged – collaboration is growing across services

Born in Lincoln Annabelle opened her practice in 2010 to support and provide eye care for the local community.

“I had my heart set on providing people with the personal, professional and consistent eye care they deserve.

Both her Burton Road and Eastgate practices are equipped with the latest technology and Annabelle ensures her professional knowledge is continually updated to keep abreast of eye conditions for her patients.

Her further optometry qualifications include the College of Optometry Professional Certificate in Low Vision; Professional Certificate in Paediatrics; Professional Certificate in Glaucoma and Postgraduate Certification in Clinical Optometry from Cardiff University.

Annabelle has always provided NHS and private services and despite the funding drought she is determined to still support the NHS for as long as she can as a small independent practice. “Clear View continues to provide NHS funded care to those entitled to it and we have taken the decision not to make the move to fully private, allowing patients the choice to both NHS and private care. We actively encourage eye care examinations for children from six months old.”

Good NHS provision across the whole county is a priority for Annabelle and over the last four years she has driven multiple pathways forward to improve community optometry as chair of the Lincolnshire Local Optical Council (LOC).

“I have promoted optometry to have a voice in primary care and over the past four years I have been committed to and passionate about increasing the profile of optometry with other primary care providers.”

As the Low Vision provider for Lincoln Annabelle has set up a Low Vision collaboration group bringing members together from all sectors of the low vision community to improve care for partially sighted patients.

Annabelle’s campaigning for a primary care paediatric pathway has led to the LOC obtaining funding for a pilot scheme and she secured resources for opticians in Lincolnshire to undertake further study to strengthen the local primary care optometry workforce.

“I was so proud to be recognised by the ICB for my contribution to NHS Primary Care Optometry. We receive daily positive feedback from our patients but to have this recognition across the wider area of NHS primary care for the campaigning and hard work I have undertaken for Lincolnshire was wonderful. I did not know I had been nominated for this award and it was a true delight to receive the recognition from my peers and even more humbling to win.”
