Driver discovers cost of using a mobile

Georgi Palimenov, the driver of a BMW 520, was seen by a police officer watching a video on his mobile phone while he waited in a queue of traffic just after 4pm on November 30 last year.

The Road Policing Team officer on an unmarked motorbike was able to see the driver as he pulled up alongside the car on Dixon Street, Lincoln.

Palimenov was holding the device with his right hand against the bottom of the steering wheel, he was looking down at the illuminated screen. Once Palimenov had noticed the officer he closed the phone but was pulled over on High Street (pictured below).

Polimenov, 24, from Chaucer Drive, Lincoln, appeared at Lincoln Magistrates Court last week when he pleaded not guilty to the illegal use of a hand-held mobile phone while driving.

He was found guilty by magistrates following a trial and was disqualified from driving for six months, fined £692 with costs and surcharges of £927.

Following the conviction police have reminded road users that driving while distracted is one of the main causes of fatal collisions and this includes using a mobile phone while at the wheel.
