
Lincoln holds VE80 celebrations tomorrow
A commemorative public event marking the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day will be held tomorrow (Thursday) in uphill Lincoln.
The celebration marks the end of the Second World War in Europe on May 8, 1945 and the day the Allies formally accepted Germany’s surrender. This historic milestone will pay tribute to bravery of all those who served during in World War II and fought for the freedom we enjoy today.
The celebrations, organised by City of Lincoln Council, are part of a national programme of events inspired by the UK’s Pageantmaster, Bruno Peek, who has been involved in the planning of a nationwide singalong and beacon lighting ceremonies.
This shared moment of celebration will unite communities across the country and pay tribute to those who served and sacrificed for peace.
The day will begin at 9am with the ceremonial raising of the VE Day flag at Lincoln’s historic Guildhall, attended by military representatives, the Mayor of Lincoln and Civic Party and the reading of the Proclamation,
Festivities in Castle Hill will commence from 4.30pm hosted by BBC Radio Lincolnshire attended by civic party and dignitaries when visitors can look forward to live musical entertainment from 1940s-style singers, and music from a DJ, and can explore displays by the Royal Air Force, Royal Logistic Corp from Sobraon Barracks, and vintage military vehicles, amongst several other military charities with stalls.
A special Choral Evensong will take place at Lincoln Cathedral at 5.30pm, followed by the ringing of the bells across the city at 6.30pm.
The culmination of the event will see the Dean of Lincoln reads the Tribute before a beacon is lit atop the walls of Lincoln at 9.30pm, joining communities across the nation in remembrance and celebration.

There will be road closures in place on Dury Lane and Steep Hill and Castle Hill car park will also be closed to the public.
