MP welcomes defence review as boost for local jobs
Lincoln MP Hamish Falconer has hailed the government’s new Strategic Defence Review as “great news for Lincoln,” saying the city is well-placed to play a key role in the country’s defence overhaul.
Reacting to Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s announcement of sweeping military reforms - including new submarines, advanced drone capabilities and increased defence spending - Mr Falconer said the review would directly benefit the local economy and support national security.
“I have spoken to the chancellor and defence secretary about the vital role that Lincoln’s RAF bases, industry and universities can play in delivering this critical work for Britain’s security,” he said. “This should mean better jobs, better work and stronger defence for Lincoln and the wider country.”
The review includes the construction of up to 12 nuclear-powered submarines, the development of a cyber command and the establishment of six new munitions factories across the UK. Starmer said the reforms were a direct response to Russia’s increasing threat, and would form the biggest contribution to NATO since its founding.
With RAF Waddington and Lincoln’s growing defence tech sector already playing central roles in the UK’s military operations, Falconer believes the region is ready to support the government’s ambitious defence agenda.
