Speed kills – police warning

Police will be tackling speeding drivers on the roads this Easter weekend in a bid to reduce the number of people killed on county roads.

A spokesperson for Lincolnshire Police said the force made no apology for targeting motorists that speed over the bank holiday – the campaign to save lives continues every day.

“We see that most people do not speed and do drive to the conditions of our roads and within the speed limits - thank you,” said the spokesperson.

“Our communities ask that we tackle road users who speed in their local areas, and we will carry on doing so. So many people are affected by the many serious injury collisions which involve speed as a contributory factor in our beautiful county.

“For anyone who believes the force makes money from issuing tickets – this is a myt - we don’t.

“Our officers in Specialist Operations are on patrol every day, often in unmarked cars and bikes, targeting criminals who use our roads and road users who are unsafe and likely to cause a serious collision due to their disregard for road safety.”

One example of a recent conviction for speeding occurred on March 15 just after 8.30am when a black Aston Martin passed one of our unmarked BMWs travelling at speeds in excess of 100mph in the northbound lane of the A1 at Foston. The speed limit is 70mph. The driver, a 27-year-old-man, was pulled over and reported for the offence of speeding.

He pleaded guilty and was fined £538, his driving licence was endorsed with 6 penalty points. He was ordered to pay £110 costs and a victim surcharge of £215.

“Twelve points is the maximum that can be added to a driving licence before a mandatory disqualification kicks in,” the spokesperson explained.

“Being disqualified has a real impact on someone’s livelihood, often more so than a hefty fine. It impacts their social and professional lives, needs to be declared when buying insurance for any vehicle and is a real inconvenience.

“Please watch your speed when you’re travelling around our county. Have a little patience. Keep our road users safe.”
