There is no holiday from domestic abuse

Holidays can be hell for victims of domestic abuse leading to increased calls to emergency services by victims.

Lincolnshire Police is highlighting vital messages of advice, help and support for those affected by domestic abuse.

T/Detective Superintendent Rachael Cox said: “There is never any justification for abusive behaviour. It’s a sad fact that people live in fear. A holiday with the perpetrator is no break from abusive behaviour.

“We see a significant increase in reports and this is probably a combination of factors including the influx of visitors we have to our coast, financial pressure, alcohol consumption and extended time together.

“If you are suffering, regardless of if you are a resident or a visitor, we want you to know that we are here for you. There is help and support available whether you report to us or not and we will be raising awareness of the national domestic abuse helpline and the local Lincolnshire Domestic Abuse Specialist Service.”

As well as highlighting the mechanisms available to assist victims and survivors, T/Detective Supt Cox also has a message for abusers, “Recognise if you are the problem and take responsibility for your actions. We won’t hesitate to use our powers of arrest and seek Domestic Violence Protection Orders from the court to protect victims and hold you accountable.”

The force is partnering with the Lincolnshire Domestic Abuse Specialist Service (LDASS) to get these messages out on new postcards with QR code links to LDASS and the national helpline. These are being distributed across our costal resorts and virtually via social media.

LDASS Senior Manager, Ann Canter, said:  "At LDASS, we know that summer isn’t a break for everyone. For many, it brings increased isolation, financial strain, and time spent with an abusive partner.

“We’re working alongside Lincolnshire Police to raise awareness and ensure that no one feels alone. Whether you’re a resident or a visitor, support is here—confidential, compassionate, and accessible."

The ‘no holiday from domestic abuse’ campaign will run through the summer with messages highlighting the following:

  • LDASS offer information, advice and where eligible, specialist intervention support. You can make an online self-referral, or call 01522 510041 (office hours).
  • If you have concerns that a partner or ex is abusive, you can ask us under Clare’s Law if there is information that we hold that means they may be a risk to you. This is also called the Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme. You can ask for yourself or someone else you are worried about.
  • Safe Spaces are consultation rooms you can use to find out about your options and the support available. They are there to give you sanctuary from your abuser. Safe Spaces are available in pharmacies including Boots, Coop, Morrisons and Superdrug and now also at certain banks.
  • Hollie Guard is an app for your phone that will track your location, send alerts to named contacts and record footage if you are in danger.
  • The National Domestic Abuse Helpline is always open: 0808 2000 247
